September Reading Wrap Up | 2021

Hello! Welcome to my September Reading Wrap Up for 2021. I had a fun and successful reading month, and I can’t wait to talk about it with you. I read 5 books, and 3 of them was me starting and finishing a trilogy recommended to me by one of my best friends! Let’s get into it!

Around the world, black hand prints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands”, she speaks many languages – not all of them human – and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out.

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

This iconic YA trilogy was recommended to me by one of my best friends, Steph! It’s one of her favorite series, and I can see why! A war between devils and angels, forbidden love, other lives, humor, and teen angst!
I had a lot of fun listening to these books through Libby! It definitely fits with the kind of writing that was in YA in the 2010s. I flew through this books last month, and my favorite part of the whole series was the MC’s best friend. She was funny, refreshing, and was essentially the place holder for how the readers might react to all of the different things happening.
While this series was enjoyable, it wasn’t perfect. I feel like the characters should have been flushed out more. I’m a hoe for character development, and it wasn’t that deep with this series at all. Also, the “big bad thing” that was trying to be avoided was hyped up, and literally nothing of note really happened. So, I wasn’t a huge fan of that. However, I’m aware this is a product of it’s time. It was entertaining, and kept me hooked until the very end.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book! I mean, I was hoping I would – but before listening to the audiobook, I had attempted to read this book twice with my eyes and never got farther than the second chapter. It really is true that some books you just need to listen to. I loved the main character, I loved that the love interest is queer, and I loved the pacing, the risk, and the twists. As a stand alone story, it stands very well and I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys fantasy but doesn’t want to commit to a series.

Okay so, this book was NOT what I was expecting it to be. Like, not at all. I thought it was going to be this tale about two sisters who loved each other, and was going to try and find each other no matter what. That is NOT what this story was at all. The thing is, I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. It was just weird, and I honestly don’t understand the ending was what it was. Maybe it’ll sink in later, but for right now… I’m disappointed I didn’t get my sister relationship driven story I was hoping for. This story was definitely unique, but the most beautiful part of the story is just the cover, sadly. If you WANT a sci-fi story about a world being destroyed by climate change (*cough* ours), and a girl trapped on a deserted island, this is for you.

Thank you so much for stopping by to see what books I read in September! It’s currently October when I’m writing this, and my reading month for the spooky time is already off to a great start. I can’t wait to talk about it with you! Happy Reading, and Happy Halloween!
