Bookish Wonders

September Reading Wrap Up |2020

I read ten books in the month of September! Six graphic novels, and four novels! I’m pleased with my reading progress, and hoping a make as much if not more progress in October (but we will see). Two were re-reads, but it had been years since I last read them.

Graphic Novels

This is a comic series I’m not charging through right now, but I can see myself picking it up more. Kamala is an easy character to love and cheer for. There is going to be a show about Ms. Marvel, so I will be picking more of these volumes up! You can find this and other volumes for free on the Libby app!

I read the last released volume of these series (so far), and I am still reeling! This is a stunning story, and I can’t wait for the next volumes to finally come out. I highly recommend this series if you like family driven, sci-fi based stories. You can find all volumes on the Libby app for free!

I picked this book up because it was on a list of LGBTQ+ graphic novel recommendations. It was an alright story. It wasn’t bad or amazing, but it was entertaining. I recommend this for middle school, and early high school aged readers for sure! This book is free on the Libby app!

I felt like this could have been way better. It had such potential. If having only snippets of a story, and having it focused on art mostly was the goal, then it did well. But I didn’t like getting invested in one of the stories, and then have it just drop off into nothing. The artwork is great, and fits the whole spooky vibes it was trying to give up. I don’t exactly recommend it, but won’t stop you if you want a quick read off of Libby.

Novels

Sawkill Girls was our book pick for my online book club, Read With Me. I loved it! It was spooky, and had LGBTQ+ representation such as asexual and bi/pansexuality. It has the predictable horror formula of slow build and excellent ending. It’s worth the commitment to the end. I loved the main girls in this book. They were all completely different from each other, and yet complicated each other. If it wasn’t a stand alone, I would be looking forward to a sequel to spend more time with them. I highly recommend it if you’re a young adult horror fan.

I know this author is trash now, and I no longer support her with my money. However, I do still enjoy the series (and I’m allowed to). I don’t let the opinions of internet strangers affect what I do with my life. I wouldn’t allow them that kind of power and entitlement. Reading my physical copies I’ve already owned before her most recent downfall doesn’t provide money or stats for her. Just as watching the dvds of the movies I’ve owned for 20 years doesn’t provide any streaming benefits towards her.
That said, I really enjoyed my first re-read of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. This was my first time reading it since I first got it back in 2005 (so fifteen years). Naturally, I didn’t remember anything so it was like reading it for the first time. I’ve never liked the movie adaption, so it was refreshing with how much I enjoyed the book. Reading these books with adult eyes is so different reading it as a kid. I may not remember what happened, but I remember how I felt reading them for the first time.

I was supposed to read this earlier this year, but kept having to push it back. I’m so glad I made it a priority, because it was an excellent finale to this story. I love anything involving faeries. This is definitely a series I will re-read again and again. I loved not knowing who to trust, and just watching the plot unravel. The character development was so well done. I HIGHLY recommend this to any faerie lover!

Listen. We are still in a pandemic here in the States, and re-reading The Selection has been one of my favorite reads of the year. It’s been four years since I last read it, and I just as hooked as I was years ago. Fluffy romances are feel good stories, and I intend on reading more of them from now on. It’s easy to get invested, and devour in record timing. Need a read you start and finish same day? You should read The Selection.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post! I hope I’ve sparked interest in new stories for you. If you’ve read any of these before, be sure to let me know in the comment section! I would love to discuss these with you!
