January Reading Wrap Up | 2021

This is late, but here is my reading wrap up for January 2021! I read five books! Two were re-reads, and three were new reads. Two were standalones, and one was the first book of a new-to-me series. I’m overall pleased with my reading month!

Dark and Deepest Red by Anna-Marie McLemore
>>> The January 2021 Read With Me Pick! <<<
This was the first book I read in 2021! It’s urban fantasy, and based off the dancing plague of 1518 in France. This story had duel timeline narratives, and a trans main character.

I really enjoyed this book! I couldn’t wait to devour this story! I liked the 1518 timeline more than the 2018 timeline. Maybe I missed something, but I didn’t see the point of the 2018 timeline. I think this story would have done well with just the 1518 timeline. That’s just me, I think. It felt like two stories instead of them complimenting the other. I didn’t care about the 2018 characters at all. But besides that, I really enjoyed this book. The ending wasn’t what I was expecting, and I thought it was very well written.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas
This was my fourth time reading this! This was in preparation of A Court of Silver Flames (which is out by the time I am writing this, I just don’t have my copy yet!). I loved it as usual, and once again saw more this time than I did before. I made sure to pay extra attention to the characters that are going to be featured more in the new books!

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas
This was my first time re-reading this book. I’m so glad I did, because I forgot so much and didn’t realize it! I saw Mor and Elain more this time around, and it was great! I know Feyre and Rhysand’s arc is over, but I still hope to see them in the new books. Goodreads says that another novella is set to come out in April of this year, but I’m honestly not sure at this point.

The Careful Undressing of Love by Corey Ann Haydu
Look, this was a weird book. I was hoping it was going to be like the other urban fantasies I’ve read and be all about breaking a curse. It just had a super weird ending, and I’m not completely sure what happened. I think it had great potential, but it just didn’t follow through. I did like how it focused on cults and cult behavior from someone who was on the inside, but questioning things.

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
I read this book by my friend Ruth’s recommendation! She really loved this series. I enjoyed this book a lot, and have already read the second book Glass Sword at the time I’m writing this. I’ll talk more about that book in my next wrap up. I’m also currently reading the third book, King’s Cage, in the series. I might have this series wrapped up by March or April.
This book had action, suspense, a dash of romance, and focuses on power and oppression. This book kicks off a war and rebellion. I’m very much invested in the characters and the outcome of this series. This series is well known, and popular, but I don’t actually know how it’ll end. There is an obvious direction, but I don’t have any detailed predictions. Aveyard likes to throw in twists I wasn’t honestly expecting. So far, I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys YA fantasy set during a magical war.

Thank you for reading my wrap up for January! I’ll be back soon, for real this time, with my February wrap up!
